about

I like the way this came out. It's both kind of 'Pop', and also kind of 'quirky'. There was a handi-capped lady who worked where I used to also work years ago, and despite her obvious challenges she always seemed up-beat and positive. She motivated me to return the attitude, and I recall seeing her in the hallway and saying, "Darlene, I could always raise a smile for you".

The song includes some fun vocal rounds and twice goes to a more experimental, ethereal-feeling bridge .... starting on a F#mi7b5 vocal chord, which is a bit uncommon for this genre. I find it adventuresome.

Another aspect of this production of which I am fond, is that it seems to grow in intensity as the track moves along. David Floyd's genius can take alot of credit for this; along with the horns in the background and the use of tympani with the other drums.

lyrics

Darlene, I will always raise a smile for you
but I really need to know that you feel the same way I do too.
Now could it be this way? :
You don't know what to say, 'cause you're not sure what I'd do ?
Take back the angry words I've said
'cause there's a heartache ahead.

I don't want to be
where I'm not wanted because you see
I can't stay
just to watch you walkin' away, Darlene.

So close and yet so far
I wonder where you are
My love I can't disguise
so close to paradise.

Dit dit dit dit dit dit dit
Dit dit dit dit dit dit dit
Dit dit dit dit dit dit dit
Da Da Da Da 'n' Da 'n' Da
Darlene

Darlene, if I just knew where I stood with you
then I'd build a dream and then learn to make it all come true.
But til I know just how you feel,
I can't make wishes real
and this poor man's love is blind.
I see a love that's meant for two
so now it's all up to you.

I don't want to be
where I'm not wanted because you see
I can't stay
just to watch you walkin' away, Darlene.

So close and yet so far
I wonder where you are
My love I can't disguise
so close to paradise

Dit dit dit dit dit dit dit
Dit dit dit dit dit dit dit
Dit dit dit dit dit dit dit
Da Da Da Da 'n' Da 'n' Da
Darlene

Darlene, I will always raise a smile for you.
We could make each other's dreams come true.
Darlene, I will always raise a smile for you.
We could make each other's dreams come true.

My my my my
